My history with Lomilomi and traditional Hawaiian healing began in the late 1800's, when the island of Madeira made a deal with the Kingdom of Hawaii to send several hundred laborers to the new sugar plantations of Hawaii. Several women in my family had been traditional healers back in Madeira - mid-wives, herbalists, bone-setters. Although language was a barrier they had no choice but overcome these barriers as the herbs of Madeira were no longer available. Over decades they shared and exchanged skills and knowledge with Hawaiian women. However, during this time the Hawaiian Kingdom was overthrown by a group of businessmen, with the backing of troops. Hawaii then became a territory of the United States. This was an era which really forced Hawaiian religion, culture, medicine underground. These practices went into the realm of secrecy, many Hawaiian practitioners stopped. Those Hawaiian practitioners that remained were hidden, working only on family members or trusted others. At that time there was no Hawaiian blood in my family, meaning, the healers of my family were not under the same gaze of the government which aimed to destroy everything Hawaiian. In the early 1900's the women of my family worked hard in Honolulu, Wahiawa, Ka'awa. They administered Hawaiian herbs, did lomilomi massage, as well as continuing the traditions of Madeira.
As a child my grandmother would sometimes work on me when I was sick or injured. However, it was always in secrecy, just as she had learned: "Okay, you are sick. I will lomilomi. But you must not tell anyone." It was very rare that she would work on me, usually not until I got a serious fever, or severely injured my shoulder. My grandfather also knew a lot though he would remain in the background, it was not until years after his passing that after repeatedly dreaming of a woman, who I eventually found out was his mother (my great-grandmother) that I came to understand his silent power. She was a Kahuna, a very powerful one. However, this remained deeply hidden in my family, as is often hidden in colonized lands. She was never spoken of except as talented singer and ukulele player, working in many Honolulu clubs. A layer beneath that was the fact that she, as well as many other women in her generation earned the majority of their livelihood as prostitutes for sailors and soldiers. She spent many years "missing", years that involved tumultuous times of arrest, and multiple marriages to American soldiers, however there were also quieter times mixed in - times of love with her Hawaiian partner, living with his family in rural Oahu where she was able to live more openly as a healer and kahuna. This is where my practice began. In lineages mostly lost into the past. But there is always the present.
Healing is the return to presence.
Come with me as we "return" to true present, the place where all things are possible. There are many ways to do this. Lomilomi, meditation, energy medicines, prayer. Each moment in life is unique, and is a gift.
I am a licensed massage therapist and am also an energy worker trained both by direct inspiration/intuition and by teachers such as Melinda Connor PhD (formerly of the University Of Arizona's Integrative Medicine Program).
Between the years 2012- 2015 I studied Raja Yoga at Magic Pond International Yoga School in Seoul, Korea, where I gained my certification as a yoga teacher. At Magic Pond I trained under Yogacarya Ron Katwijk, Secretary to the IYF (International Yoga Federation). Magic Pond has been a leader in yoga education in Korea since its founding in 1997. Raja Yoga is a practice which emphasizes the esoteric dimensions of yoga through asana, meditation, and movement of energy in order to control the mind and body.
